This is an interesting post, I like how cleanly you laid out your experience with farmville. The point 3 - allow uses to create without typing, I found it a little sad that such a popular game requires such a little amount of thought, however I do like the general sentiment. Things need to be easy to do otherwise you lose a good part of your audience.

Groupon appeals to startups and businesses that are on the edge of failure. There is no way successful businesses are going to degrade its brand by participating in a fire sale of its products and services. This will limit the number of type of businesses the site can tap into.nnAt the end of the day the scaleability of this business model is limited. nnNo way it is a billion+ dollar company.

Another note. I've spoken with a handful (10-12) merchants who have used Groupon. A common note is struck with most of them regarding their experience with Groupon: They Feel Fleeced. e.g. - they give away the farm to get "new customers" into the door, but the customers never come back. It's almost like these are Groupon Groupies and the merchant got their five minutes of fame - at a high cost. The Groupies are on to the next deal, Groupon got the merchant's emails, and the merchant is left holding the bag.

I think one must look at Groupon under a customer acquisition cost. If you dont have the cashflow to support that acquisition cost then you are doing this for a short term revenue boost.

I like your math, however your assumption that all 25 make what they planned (12%) is not going to hold true for all 25. I think you need to add another factor, say only 10% or so will make 12% and the rest will not (pick a low number for them if you want). If you make this alteration, the amount of annual exists will come down to something lower... However, overall I tend to agree with your point, that not all funds (angel or vc) will come out making acceptable returns without hitting a few home-runs.

Andrew,

Thank you very much for your comment and the link. Frightening stuff!

I'm looking to switch my casual lunch habit. I've added salads and started grilling chicken breasts more. What do you do for quick, healthy lunches at home and on the go?

Thanks,
Phil

Rather than quibble over the volume of sodium in processed meat, the question is should you even be eating it at all? (per http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE64G5TN20100517)

I think processed meat deserves a place as a rarity, not an item to be eaten on demand for a casual lunch. I've changed my sandwich habits this year and have no regrets. Ham can wait for Easter where I have the opportunity to enjoy it.
